HAZIZI JAAFAR

Zi’s musical odyssey began in a secondary school band and has elevated him to become a distinguished ambassador of Singapore’s musical heritage. With over 15 years in the Singapore Armed Forces Band, Zi mastered both musical and managerial roles, leading his team on triumphant international tours across China, Japan, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Vietnam, Malaysia, Switzerland, Scotland, and the USA.

His expertise in nurturing talent was showcased during the National Day Parades, where he skillfully coached and conducted students with Special Needs, highlighting their percussive talents. As a representative of Singapore in the Society of International Rudimental Drummers, Zi has made significant contributions at conferences in Paris and Bern.

Zi’s pedagogical journey spans Singapore’s prestigious institutions, where he has imparted his profound musical insights to students at Nanyang Technological University, Raffles Institution, and Singapore Chinese Girls School, among others. His masterclasses at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) underscore his role as a mentor par excellence. The SNYO even commissioned him to compose a piece for their Percussion Ensemble, recognizing his creative flair.

Zi’s versatility extends to numerous orchestras and wind ensembles in Singapore and Southeast Asia, where he has served as both conductor and integral member. In contemporary music, he has been the driving force behind the drums for various ensembles, including The Jukuleles, and has performed alongside notable artists such as Nathan Hartono, Daniel Sid, and Christo Alexander. He also performed with Japanese superstar Chage from Chage & Aska during their concert in Singapore.

His international acclaim peaked with a tour for Rich Brian at the Head In The Clouds Festival in Jakarta and Manila, further cementing his status as a versatile and dynamic musician. With over two decades of experience in drumming education, Zi has cultivated a generation of percussionists, whose achievements include distinctions in exams and international recognition, notably in the Global Drum-Off competition.

Zi’s journey is not merely one of musical mastery but a testament to his dedication to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He stands as a beacon of inspiration and excellence in music education.
